I don't get it either. I think it's roughly equivalent to people who've friended you and you've friended back, but I would't swear to that. If you give them access, you're saying they can read your posts; if you subscribe to them, means you want to read their posts? That's what I get out of it, anyway. "Mutual" would mean you're reading each other's posts?
